History Of Fakarava
There are a few historical sites of interest on Fakarava that can be visited. The two coral churches are very interesting, traditional and pretty and the stone-stepped pyramid lighthouse is an impressive sight. The site is open, but the tower itself is closed due to safety regulations. It is a nice, easy bike ride from the hotel and well worth a visit.
German born Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellinghausen and his crew were the first Europeans recorded to reach Fakarava. Serving as a naval officer of the Russian Empire, he commanded the second Russian expedition to circumnavigate the globe. They arrived on July 17, 1820 on the ships Vostok and Mirni. Gottlieb von Bellinghausen named the island “Wittgenstein.”
